Five Ways to Check Whether Your Car Is Still Covered
Not sure when your car insurance expires, or whether you’re still covered? Whether you’ve missed a renewal reminder or simply lost track of the date, start with your cover note or policy schedule. It lists your insurer and the dates your cover starts and ends.
Can’t find your documents? There are several other ways to check your policy status, depending on whether you need your expiry date, your insurer’s name or confirmation that your policy is still active.
How to check your insurance status
Compare your options below, then read on how to use each method.
| Method | What you need | What it shows | What it will not tell you | Cost |
| Cover notes or policy schedule | Email or print out from last renewal | Policy number, period of cover, cover type | Whether cover was cancelled after it was issued | Free |
| Insurer's online quote page | Vehicle registration number and identity card number, sometimes additional vehicle details | Status, expiry date, NCD and insurance premium quote. | Who currently insures you | Free |
| ISM's MyCarInfo I-Search | Registration number | Last known insurer (free tier); policy information for the past 3 years (comprehensive report) | Full policy terms; Confirm current status with your insurer | Basic tier free; comprehensive report uses paid credits |
| ISM's MyCarInfo NCD enquiry | Registration number and identity number | Industry NCD record for the vehicle and holder | Full policy terms or current premium | Refer the official page |
| MyJPJ or mySIKAP | Registered account and vehicle details | Road tax (LKM) expiry and other licensing information | Policy number, insurer, or live insurance status | Free |
| Your insurer | Registration number and policyholder details | Everything on file about your policy | Anything about a policy held elsewhere | Free |
Now let's explore these options in detail.
Option 1 - Check your cover note or policy schedule
If you bought or renewed a policy, you should have a cover note or a policy schedule, usually emailed to you at the time. If you renewed your policy physically, you would have received the printed version. These documents state your period of cover: the start date, the expiry date, and the insurer's name.
- Cover note — issued when cover starts, before the full policy documents arrive. Under Act 333 (the Road Transport Act 1987), a cover note counts as a policy of insurance, so it's genuine proof of cover, not just a receipt.
- Policy schedule / certificate — lists the insured period, so the expiry date is right there.
Documents have one clear limitation: they show what was true when they were issued. If a policy was cancelled afterwards, or a renewal was arranged through a different channel, the paper in your drawer will not reflect that. Use your documents as the first and fastest answer, then verify against a live source if the date is close or something feels off.
Can’t find your policy documents?
- Search your email for your insurer’s name, vehicle registration number, “cover note” or “policy schedule”.
- Check where you keep your car documents for a printed copy.
- Ask your insurer or the agent who arranged your policy to send you another copy.
Option 2 - Check your expiry date and NCD on an insurer's quote page
Malaysia's insurance companies use a shared industry record coordinated through ISM (Insurance Services Malaysia Berhad), which is the insurance industry body that maintains central motor insurance records.
That is why some insurers’ online quote platforms can help you check your insurance expiry date and NCD, particularly when renewal is approaching. Enter the requested personal and vehicle details to see what information is available.
A handy upside to the shared industry record is that switching insurers at renewal can be straightforward. You can usually get an insurance premium quote from another company without referring first with your current insurer.
However, the platforms will not name your current insurer, so use I-Search (see below) for that part.
One caveat: This check generally works only when renewal is relatively near, and the cut-off date varies by insurer. If expiry is far away and nothing returns, rely on your documents for now and check again closer to renewal.
Option 3 - Find your last known insurer with MyCarInfo
MyCarInfo is the public lookup site run by ISM.
It offers two useful services:
- I-Search — shows your last known insurer. The basic tier is free (a paid tier with a fuller report, going back three years, uses paid credits). Handy if you can't remember which company you renewed with.
- NCD enquiry — you enter your vehicle registration number and ID number and get your NCD report. If the NCD amount looks wrong, MyCarInfo's own guidance is to contact your insurance company or takaful operator directly.
One caution: Use only the official web address which is mycarinfo.com.my, since the site itself warns of impersonation scams. Stick to the site itself and don't hand information to anyone contacting you "on behalf of" a lookup service.
Option 4 - Check your road-tax expiry with MyJPJ (an indirect signal)
The MyJPJ app does not list insurance status among its published functions. JPJ lists road-tax (LKM) expiry, driving licence expiry, the latest plate number and vehicle information, summons and related checks, alongside MyDigital ID login and branch services.
Road tax still tells you something, though only indirectly. JPJ's road-tax renewal guide says the vehicle must have insurance covering the whole LKM period applied for, and private-car LKM runs for six months or one year. A live road tax normally implies that cover was in place when it was renewed. That is reassuring where road tax is current, although it does not replace a direct check of the policy dates.
Access is also limited, as JPJ says MyJPJ ID is currently for Malaysian-citizen individuals. JPJ is developing access for non-citizen and companies.
Option 5 - Contact your insurance company for confirmation
The simplest option if you know who you're with: call or message your insurer's customer service line.
When records disagree, or an online result looks unclear, an insurance company’s definitive record can confirm the policy status. The record shows whether the policy is active, lapsed or cancelled. Have the registration number, policyholder name and policy number ready before you call the helpline, as that shortens the phone call.
Keep any reference number if the correction takes time.
What to do if your car insurance has expired
If the policy has lapsed, do not drive until it is replaced. Contact your current insurer or another insurer to arrange cover and confirm when the new policy takes effect before driving.
Using a vehicle without third-party cover is an offence under section 90 of the Road Transport Act 1987. The penalty is a fine of up to RM1,000, up to three months in prison, or both. A conviction can also cost you your licence for twelve months. [1]
Road-tax renewal is blocked too, since JPJ requires cover for the LKM period.
There is a longer-term cost as well. According to PIAM, the industry association, letting a motor policy lapse for too long can erode your accumulated NCD. It may revert to zero after five years without a policy. Renewing before a lapse becomes long is the cheaper path.
Keep track of your next renewal
Once you’ve confirmed your expiry date, save a reminder in your calendar. Your insurer may also send renewal reminders by email, SMS or app notification, so keep your contact details up to date.
Liberty customers receive well-timed email reminders. They can also use the Liberty One Touch app for renewal notifications.
Treat reminders as prompts to renew; they do not confirm that your cover has been renewed.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check if my car insurance is active?
Contact your current insurer for confirmation. Do this especially if records disagree or you suspect the policy has been cancelled. Your policy schedule shows the stated cover dates, while some insurers’ quote platforms may also display expiry information near renewal.
Can I check my car insurance online?
Yes. Your options are:
- Any insurer’s online quote platform, to verify that your record exists,
- MyCarInfo’s website at mycarinfo.com.my,
- Email confirmation of policy purchase from your insurance company, and
- Your current insurer’s mobile app.
Does valid road tax mean my insurance is still active?
Not by itself. JPJ requires an insurance policy covering the whole LKM (road tax) period before issuing the road tax. So MyJPJ status only implies that the cover was in place at renewal. Cover can still lapse afterwards, so check the policy dates or the quote-page result for today's position.
How do I check which insurer my car is with?
Run the free basic I-Search on MyCarInfo with the vehicle registration number, as it returns the last known insurer. A quote page will show status and expiry but will not name that insurer. Take the insurer name from I-Search and then call that company to confirm.
How can I check my car NCD in Malaysia?
Use the MyCarInfo NCD enquiry with your plate and identity-card numbers, or key the same details into an insurer's quote page near renewal. Your No Claim Discount is the discount that builds up after claim-free years, and if the figure looks wrong, ask your insurer to correct it.
Can I check the insurance status of someone else's car?
You will need the registration number and usually the owner's identity number, so you should only do this with the owner's permission. This often arises after buying a used car or helping a family member with renewal.
Checking your cover before you renew? Liberty's car insurance page lets you check your NCD status and insurance expiry date through our online quote platform, and from there you can review your renewal options. Visit Liberty car insurance to see your details and take the next step.
